Arson suspected at Avondale charter school fire.
A fire in a boys' bathroom closed an Avondale charter school Wednesday morning, officials said.

Police and firefighters responded to Imagine Avondale Elementary School, 950 N. Eliseo C. Felix Jr. Way, about 8 a.m. when the fire alarm went off, Avondale police spokesman Rueben Gonzales said. A fire in a bathroom garbage can set off the fire alarm.

"The school's sprinkler system put out the flames before they spread, but the blaze damaged some paper towel dispensers, Gonzales said."

Students evacuated the K-8 school when the alarm went off, and later were sent home because of the water from the sprinklers, Gonzales said. Investigators called the fire "suspicious," Avondale Fire-Rescue spokesman Art Snapp said.

Police and fire are investigating the incident as "possible arson," Gonzales said. They have some leads and students may have been responsible, he said.
